For Miart 2024 we intend to present a solo show by emergent Paris-based artist Tali Lennox (1993, United Kingdom).
Tali Lennox’s figurative, dreamlike paintings evoke scenes of erotic and decadent chambers and mystifying landscapes, merging mythological and folkloric references with her own symbolic lexicon. There are shells, bodies of water, gleaming oysters, crying eyes, objects of worship and rays of light. The magnetism of her work stems from the desire to play with and explore the liminal space between waking and sleeping, reality and fantasy, day and night.
Elemental and folkloric tones fill Lennox’s sleek, shiny paintings that suggest the heightened drama of German Expressionists mixed with ancient symbology to give the pieces a sensitive naturalism. Her palette is skillfully refined, with bottle greens and dark, watery blues harmonized by a range of iridescent lunar whites and pearly creams.
Her landscapes evoke the beauty and savagery of the natural world and probe our enduring fascination with the end of times. Inspired by the 16th-century Augsburg Book of Miracles, her apocalyptic scenes suggest the idea of nature as the highest power and convey a sense of mysticism, wonderment, and total unease.
A pervasive sense of climatic pleasure energizes Lennox’s work and plays with the sexual power of feminine energy through mysticism with gothic undertones. Her weeping Madonnas or religious shrines populated with sinful beings are halfway between spirituality and blasphemy, with a touch of fetishism. Women’s bodies appear in a state somewhere between pain and pleasure, tension and release, orgasm and apocalypse.
Inspired in part by a continued interest in natural disasters, ancient folklore and spirit realms, Lennox ponders the miraculous enigma of the human experience as it exists within the natural world, never shying away from its beauty or its chaos.
