Sébastien Bertrand is pleased to present Burning Daylight, a solo exhibition that introduces Justin Cole’s (1995, Brooklyn, NY) work for the first time at the gallery.

An acknowledgement of the inescapable passage of time, Justin Cole’s latest series consecrates the inevitable: beauty fades, our days are numbered, and nature will go on without you. Named after an expression that means “to waste time,” Burning Daylight reckons with life’s inherent truths. Each image serves as a moment of clarity, reminding viewers of life’s brevity.

In the ten oil paintings included in the exhibition, Cole creates a new dimension, one where the laws of realism are muddled, the color palettes surreal. Those choices underpin the work’s dream-like quality. The line between form and atmosphere is blurred, representing ephemerality. Colors are naturalistic but idealized, with nuances added or subtracted to help unify the theme.
